Barnadown Showjumping Spring Show

Another good show for Philip Horgan and his 8 year old chestnut gelding 'Erris Flight'. This super combination of horse and rider took first place in the 1.30m class on Sunday beating off some 60 other competitors. On the previous Friday they had to be content with second place as last into the arena 'Paul O Shea' pipped them at the post.

Kilguilkey Hunter trials 2nd May 2010

Well done to our own Zoe Mehigan who came 3rd last Sunday in the Kilguilkey Hunter Trials in Cecilstown. Zoe and her pony, 'Ginger' had a super quick clear round in the under 12's competition at the Hunter Trials. Zoe has been riding at Bridestown Towers Equestrian Centre since she was 6 years old and her father purchased 'Ginger' for her earlier this year. The time and effort that Zoe has put into 'Ginger' since she got her is now beginning to show results. As well as developing into a keen cross country rider, Zoe is also mastering the show jumping ring, as she holds, at present, the leading pony & rider combination in the Spring league in Mallow.

Coilog 1st - 3rd May 2010

Good show for Philip Horgan at showjumping Irelands premiere series held in Coilog last weekend. Philip started the opening day on Saturday by qualifying his horse 'Azarro Van Het Hoogeinde' for the 1.50m Grand to be held on the Bank holiday Monday. On Sunday, his horse 'Erris flight' took 2nd place in the 1.30m class, while later in the day, 'Azarro Van Het Hoogeinde' continued his jumping form by taking 5th place in the 1.40m competition.

Bank Holiday Monday was to become the best of the three days with Philip starting the day by taking 1st and 3rd place in the 1.30m class with 'Erris flight' and 'Dunkerrin' respectively. Later in the day 'Azarro Van Het Hoogiende' put in a superb performance in his first 1.50m Grand Prix, producing a beautiful clear jumping round over Tom Holdons track. Unfortunately, he did incur 1 time penalty which left him out of the top prized, and Philip had to be satisfied with 8th place.

Coilog Premiere League Series 2010

The second round of the Showjumping Ireland Premiere Series was held last weekend [1st – 3rd May] at Coilog Equestrian Centre, Co Kildare. The qualifying round was held on Saturday with a strong field of over 60 entries. From this the top 30 were brought forward to the 1.50m grand prix on Bank Holiday Monday. A strong course was built by ‘Mr Tom Holden’, which saw 6 into the jump off.

Acting as pathfinder, local rider Edward Doyle, set the target clear in a time of 43.74 with ‘Clipper VD Begijnakker’ but it was Northern rider Dermott Lennon who took the final honours riding Sandra Lennon’s eight year-old gelding ‘Vampire’, the combination was quickest of the six-way jump-off when clear in 41.07. Galway rider, Olive Clarke looked set for the challenge and took all the tight lines with Harry Aird’s eleven-year-old Irish bred stallion, ‘Cruising Mickey Finn’.  Delivering a super clear in a time of 41.48 was enough to claim the runner-up place, leaving Edward Doyle in 3rd place. Tholm Keane, Trevor Breen and Mervyn Clarke also produced fast rounds in the jump off but they failed to produce clear rounds which placed them in 4th, 5th and 6th respectively.

Philip Horgan with his mount ‘Azarro Van Het Hoogeinde’ produced a beautiful clear over the jumps but was one of 3 competitors to incur 1 time fault. Philip was thrilled with Azarro as it was the horses first 1.50m Grand Prix and he would have very little experience over these types of fences. The others who performed clears over the jumps but incurred time penalties were Mervyn Clarke riding ‘The Big Boy’ and Jonathan Corrigan with ‘Quantum Udessa’.

Ballyrafter League April 30th 2010

Today was the last day to qualify for the final of the Ballyrafter pony training league. It was a great day for Emma McGrath with her pony 'Aussie', as she produced another double clear round in the 70cms class to secure her the leading pony and rider title. To add to her enjoyment for the day, Emma rode 'Aussie' in her first 80cms class and performed a foot perfect double clear round.

Emma and her twin sister Grace started riding at Bridestown Towers EC when they were 6 and they both took to it with ease. Killian and Margaret, Grace and Emma's parents, bought 'Aussie' for them last year and with regular training they have transformed this novice pony into a little super star. Emma does most of the riding now, although she'd be lost without Grace, her in house groom and confidante.
